A goal you move is a goal you stop believing
My business goal lives in exactly one place, and I don't change it mid-year. Those two decisions did more for my numbers than any strategy.
Tabled for now. Built, not on the homepage, still true.
The job I gave away
Renegotiating with myself. A soft month and the goal quietly slid down. A great week and it slid up. By the end I had four versions of the number in four places, and I didn't believe any of them.
What runs now
One file holds the goal. Every screen, every report, every scoreboard in my system reads that one file. There's no second copy anywhere, because the last time there were copies they disagreed, four separate times, and I made real decisions off the wrong one.
And the number doesn't move. I set it once, for the year, on purpose. My words when I decided: a goal you move is a goal you stop believing. If I miss it, the miss is the information. Moving the target would only erase the lesson.
The free version, one number, one place
Pick the number
Sales, workouts, savings, whatever the goal is. Decide how long it stands, and write the date it can be reconsidered.
Write it in one place, and only one
A note called The Number. Every time you want to see it, you open that note.
Once a month, paste the note and your actual results into your chat app with this:
Here is my goal and here are my real numbers so far. Tell me where I am against it, in one line, and whether I am ahead or behind pace for the year. Do not suggest changing the goal. If I am behind, give me the one thing that most explains the gap.
What it hands back
Where this goes wrong
Keeping a second copy just for the dashboard. Six copies of my goal drifted apart and I made four real decisions off the wrong one before I noticed. One file. Everything reads it. Nothing else is allowed to hold the number.
The rule underneath
One copy, one date. A goal you can edit whenever you like will get edited whenever you're tired. Make changing it a scheduled decision, not a mood.
